Its nearly Christmas, the debate as long ago started again of what’s the greatest Christmas song of all time.

Well, here’s our take

1. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” – Mariah Carey
This song tops the UK’s most‑streamed Christmas tracks year after year. It first came out in 1994 and has since become synonymous with Christmas in Britain. It finally reached number one on the UK Singles Chart decades after its release, setting records for longevity on the charts, and it’s officially the most streamed festive song in the UK. People queue it up in shops, at parties and on radios from early December through the holiday season.

2. “Last Christmas” – Wham!
A festive staple since 1984, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” blends pop sheen with bittersweet lyrics about love and loss at Christmas. Though it originally peaked at number two, it has re‑entered the charts year after year and finally claimed Christmas number one in recent years. Its enduring appeal makes it one of the UK’s most played and most loved seasonal songs.

3. “Fairytale of New York” – The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl
In many UK polls, “Fairytale of New York” comes out as the nation’s favourite Christmas song. It’s been called the most played Christmas track of the 21st century in the UK and stands out for its gritty, emotional take on the season. Its mix of celebration, heartbreak and storytelling gives it a special place in British Christmas culture that goes beyond the usual festive cheer.

4. “Merry Christmas Everyone” – Shakin’ Stevens
This upbeat 1985 hit is a quintessentially British Christmas party song. Its jolly melody and warm lyrics about family, friends and the festive spirit have made it a perennial favourite on holiday playlists. Consistently among the most streamed and most played Christmas songs in the UK, it’s a track that many Brits associate with traditions like decorating the tree and gathering with loved ones.

5. “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” – Brenda Lee
A classic from 1958 that never seems to fade, “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” brings rockabilly energy to Christmas gatherings. Thanks in part to popular films and countless covers, it remains one of the most recognised and streamed festive songs in the UK. Its timeless feel keeps it near the top of holiday party playlists and radio rotations.
