Big sounds, big personalities… but which one wins?

It’s one of those debates that never really goes away. The 80s or the 90s… which decade gave us the best music?

Both delivered iconic artists, unforgettable songs, and moments that still shape what we hear today. But they did it in very different ways.

The Case for the 80s

Big, bold, and impossible to ignore

The 80s didn’t do subtle. Everything was bigger. Bigger choruses, bigger hair, bigger production. It was the era where pop, rock and new wave all collided and created something unforgettable.

Artists like Michael Jackson dominated globally with huge, polished hits, while Madonna constantly reinvented what pop music could look and sound like.

In the UK, Duran Duran and Wham! helped define the sound of the decade, blending style with instantly catchy tracks.

And then you’ve got the rock side. Bon Jovi, U2 and Guns N’ Roses delivered anthems that still fill arenas today.

Why people love it:

Huge, feel-good anthems
Instantly recognisable sounds
A real sense of escapism

The Case for the 90s

Raw, real, and full of attitude

If the 80s were polished, the 90s were a reaction to that. Grittier, more honest, and more diverse. This is where genres really started to split and find their own identities.

Grunge exploded with Nirvana changing the direction of rock almost overnight. Meanwhile, Britpop took over the UK with Oasis and Blur battling it out for chart dominance.

Pop still had its place too. Spice Girls brought pure energy and attitude, while Take That dominated the charts and fanbases.

Dance music also stepped forward in a big way, with acts like The Prodigy and Fatboy Slim shaping club culture and beyond.

Why people love it:

More variety across genres
A raw, authentic feel
Music that reflected real life more closely

So… which was better?

That depends on what you want from music.

If you love big, polished, singalong anthems that make you feel good instantly, the 80s probably win.

If you prefer something more raw, diverse, and reflective of real life, the 90s might edge it.

The real answer

The truth is, you don’t have to choose.

Both decades gave us music that still gets played, still gets requested, and still sounds brilliant today. Whether it’s an 80s anthem or a 90s classic, it all comes down to how it makes you feel.

So… 80s or 90s? Which side are you on?
