The TV Adverts We Still Know Word For Word

Before streaming, before skipping, and definitely before “ad-free”, TV adverts were part of the viewing experience, not an interruption.

In fact, for many of us growing up through the 80s and 90s, the adverts were just as memorable as the programmes themselves.

You didn’t mute them.
You quoted them.
You waited for them.

The Jingles That Never Left Us

There’s something about a catchy advertising jingle that burrows into your brain and refuses to leave.

Decades later, you can still sing along without missing a beat.

Whether it was chocolate, soft drinks, toys or washing powder, the music was always upbeat, ridiculously catchy and designed to stick. And it worked.

Even now, hear the opening few notes and you’re instantly back in the living room, probably sitting cross-legged on the carpet.

Event Adverts

Some adverts felt like TV events in their own right.

Big Christmas campaigns would debut during prime time shows and everyone would talk about them the next day at school or work.

They had storylines, characters and cinematic production values long before that became standard.

You didn’t just watch them. You remembered them.

The Voices We Trusted

Adverts also had those instantly recognisable voiceovers. Warm, friendly, reassuring voices selling everything from cars to cereals.

They became part of the cultural background noise of growing up.

Even without seeing the screen, you knew exactly what was being advertised just from the tone and delivery.

Playground and Office Catchphrases

Adverts gave us catchphrases that lived far beyond the ad break.

They were repeated in playgrounds, offices and pubs. Sometimes the advert itself faded away but the line stuck around for years.

It was shared language before memes existed.

Simpler Persuasion

Looking back, adverts felt simpler.

No targeted algorithms. No personalised feeds. Just broad, colourful campaigns aimed at everyone watching ITV on a Tuesday night.

And because we all saw the same ones, they became shared cultural moments.
