No matter how much we love our homes, there are always a few jobs we’d happily hand over to someone else.

Some chores are satisfying. There’s something quite rewarding about a freshly cut lawn or a spotless kitchen.

But then there are the jobs that somehow manage to stay at the bottom of the to-do list week after week.

Here are some of the household tasks that few people genuinely enjoy.

Cleaning the oven

It’s one of those jobs that’s easy to ignore.

You tell yourself you’ll do it next weekend. Then the next one. Before long, you’re wondering how cheese ended up stuck to the roof of the oven.

By the time you finally tackle it, you’re scrubbing away while promising yourself you’ll never let it get this bad again.

It always starts with good intentions.

Halfway through, the sun comes out and suddenly every smear you’ve just created becomes painfully obvious.

Somehow they often look worse than when you started.

Ironing

For many people, ironing feels like a battle you can never win.

You finish one basket only to discover another pile waiting.

And just as you’ve finally got that shirt looking perfect, you somehow create another crease while carrying it upstairs.

Cleaning behind furniture

Out of sight, out of mind.

Until you move the sofa.

Dust, forgotten toys, loose change, remote controls and things you thought you’d lost years ago suddenly reappear.

It’s like opening a time capsule.

Emptying the gutters

Not only is it messy, but it usually involves balancing on a ladder while wondering why leaves seem capable of multiplying.

It’s definitely not anyone’s idea of a relaxing Saturday morning.

Cleaning the bathroom

Nobody minds having a clean bathroom.

Getting it that way is another matter.

Shower screens seem to attract limescale overnight, taps lose their shine almost instantly and cleaning around the toilet is a job everyone quietly hopes someone else will volunteer for.

Sorting out the garage

Most garages begin life with enough room for a car.

A few years later they’re full of paint tins, Christmas decorations, old bikes, broken furniture, mystery cables and several boxes labelled “Useful”.

One afternoon of tidying somehow turns into an all-day project.

Where do they go?

Every household seems to have a collection of lonely socks waiting for their missing partner to return.

Despite countless theories, the mystery remains unsolved.

Changing the bedding

Fresh sheets feel wonderful.

Actually changing them?

Trying to wrestle a duvet into its cover can quickly turn into an unexpected workout.

By the end, you’re wondering how something so simple became so complicated.

Cleaning the fridge

It starts with throwing away a yoghurt that’s been out of date for a fortnight.

Then you notice the sticky jam jar, a mystery sauce at the back and vegetables that have seen better days.

It’s amazing what can disappear into the depths of a fridge.

The jobs never really end

The funny thing about housework is that it’s never truly finished.

As soon as one job is crossed off the list, another one appears.

The washing basket fills up again.

The grass grows back.

The windows collect fingerprints.

The dishwasher needs emptying.

Perhaps that’s why so many of us dream about winning the lottery and hiring someone else to do it all.

Until then, we’ll keep putting off cleaning the oven for just one more weekend.

Or at least until guests announce they’re coming round.
