Two men imprisoned over the killing of PC Andrew Harper are set to remain behind bars after the Prime Minister announced changes to a planned early-release scheme.

Andy Burnham confirmed that prisoners convicted of unlawful killing, including manslaughter, will now be excluded from the scheme, which begins in October to ease prison overcrowding. The decision means Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole will no longer be freed halfway through the thirteen-year sentences handed down in 2020.

A major manhunt is under way in Switzerland after a shooting at a rave in Schachen left one person dead and five others injured.

A major search operation is continuing in the English Channel after a vessel issued a distress signal off the Plymouth coast, leaving two crew members missing.

Emergency services were alerted south-west of Eddystone Lighthouse shortly after six o’clock on Saturday evening. HM Coastguard confirmed three of the five people aboard have been rescued, with helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, RNLI lifeboats, and civilian vessels continuing an intensive search.
