The suspect in a shooting near the White House has died after being shot by police officers.

The US Secret Service said a man pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing at a security checkpoint just after eleven o’clock UK time last night. Officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who later died in hospital. One bystander was also hit during the gunfire.
