US Senator Marco Rubio has described today’s discussions on a Ukraine peace plan as “the most productive and meaningful” so far.

He said the US State Department is making adjustments to its proposal, reflecting Ukrainian input, though further work is needed. Any agreement, he added, will require approval from Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, alongside a response from Russia. Rubio said he feels “comfortable” with the process moving forward.

Sir Keir Starmer has said he “absolutely” wants Angela Rayner back in his cabinet following her resignation over a stamp duty error.

Speaking from the G20 summit in South Africa, the prime minister praised Rayner as a shining example of social mobility and confirmed they remain in regular contact. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that patrol ship HMS Severn shadowed and intercepted the Russian warship Stoikiy and the tanker Yelnya during a continuous operation. Protests have erupted in Crowborough, East Sussex, against proposals to house asylum seekers at a nearby army training camp.

Residents marched through the town, chanting “send them home” and calling for locals to form patrols and refuse to pay council tax. The charity said everyone was heartbroken by the sudden loss of their lovely Sarah, adding that she was devoted to her two young children. Wiltshire Police say their investigation continues.

Israel has carried out an airstrike in the centre of Beirut for the first time in months.

The Israeli military says it targeted the chief of staff of Hezbollah, claiming he had overseen the group’s build up and rearmament. A statement from the office of Benjamin Netanyahu said the strike was ordered on the advice of the defence minister and the military’s chief of staff. There has been no independent confirmation of the target’s condition, and tensions along the Israel Lebanon border remain high.
