At least two people have been killed and eight others critically injured in a shooting at Brown University in the US state of Rhode Island.

Officials say the incident is believed to be unfolding near an engineering building on the campus, according to alerts issued by the university. Providence Police and the Rhode Island State Police are responding, and it is not yet clear whether any arrests have been made.

Two teenagers have died after a car crashed into a tree near Rotherham in South Yorkshire.

Police say a seventeen year old girl was driving a silver Toyota Corolla from Dinnington towards Todwick when the car left Todwick Road. She and a seventeen year old boy who was a passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. An eighteen year old man who was also in the car was taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Two people have died following reports of an explosion in a garden in south Wales.

Emergency services were called at six ten on Friday evening to a house on Heol Fawr in Nelson Caerphilly. Gwent Police said officers and firefighters attended and confirmed two people were pronounced dead at the scene and their family has been informed by attending crews.

Two men have been arrested after a village Christmas tree was cut down hours after its lights were switched on in Shotton Colliery County Durham.

The tree had stood for more than a decade and grown from a sapling, becoming so large the village planned to replace the lights. Police said it was felled overnight causing huge upset locally there.
