Before smartphones, GPS and endless travel apps, family holidays were a very different experience. Gen X kids remember a time when planning a trip meant paper maps, cassette tapes in the car and hoping you didn’t get hopelessly lost.

Here’s a look back at what family holidays were really like.

Paper maps everywhere

Before Google Maps, your journey relied on fold-out paper maps.
One wrong turn and you could be hours off course. The passenger (usually the mum or dad) would be the designated “map reader,” squinting at tiny print and trying to convince the driver they were heading the right way.

Service stations and pit stops

Stopping every couple of hours was essential.
Service stations were mini adventures: a stretch of legs, snacks, and a chance to pick up postcards or sweets. You knew exactly which station sold the best chocolate bars and which had the cleanest toilets.

Music in the car

Cassette tapes were the soundtrack of the journey.
Family favourites, “Now That’s What I Call Music” compilations, or your carefully recorded mixtapes made the miles fly by. Sometimes someone would hit fast forward or rewind at the wrong moment, sparking a mini family debate.

Caravans, camping, and Butlins

Accommodation varied depending on budget and style.
Some families opted for caravans or tents, setting up camp in the great outdoors. Others preferred Butlins or Pontins, with endless entertainment, arcades and swimming pools. Either way, the holiday always came with a sense of adventure.

Getting lost was part of the fun

Without sat-nav, losing your way was almost guaranteed.
Sometimes it meant discovering hidden villages or local cafés, other times it meant arguments and missed mealtimes. Either way, it became part of the story you told friends when you got home.

Family holidays before the internet were slower, simpler, and full of little challenges.
Looking back, those trips weren’t just about the destination—they were about the journey, the laughter, and memories that last a lifetime.
