Gen X occupies a unique place in history.

We grew up in an analogue world.

Telephones had cords.
Music came on tapes.
Photos lived in albums.
The internet wasn’t even a thing for most of our childhood.

Then, seemingly overnight, everything became digital.

There wasn’t a handbook.

No YouTube tutorials.

No helpful online forums.

We learned by pressing buttons, making mistakes and hoping we hadn’t accidentally broken the family computer.

Looking back, those lessons taught us some surprisingly useful skills.

Saving Your Work… Constantly

Every Gen Xer remembers losing something important.

A school project.
A work document.
A carefully written letter.

One power cut or software crash and hours of work disappeared forever.

The lesson?

Save early.

Save often.

Even today, many of us still press Ctrl + S without even thinking about it.

It’s practically muscle memory.

Understanding File Names

Before cloud storage organised everything for us, file names mattered.

Very quickly, you learned the difference between:

Final.doc

Final2.doc

Final_Final.doc

Final_ThisOneReally.doc

Somewhere along the way, we also discovered that creating proper folders was a much better system.

Eventually.

Installing Software From Floppy Discs

Buying new software used to feel like an event.

Open the box.

Insert Disc 1.

Wait.

Insert Disc 2.

Wait some more.

Find the product key.

And pray nothing interrupted the installation at 98%.

Connecting To The Internet

The sound of dial-up internet is permanently stored in every Gen X memory.

The strange electronic screech.

The waiting.

The hope that nobody picked up the house phone.

Once connected, you treated every minute online like it mattered because someone else probably wanted to make a phone call.

Learning To Spot Dodgy Emails

Before spam filters became clever, strange emails landed in everyone’s inbox.

You’ve won a lottery.

A mysterious prince needs your help.

Click here immediately.

Gen X quickly learned that if something sounded too good to be true…

It almost certainly was.

That lesson still comes in handy today.

Burning Your Own CDs

Creating the perfect compilation CD required planning.

Choosing tracks.

Getting the running order right.

Making sure everything fitted onto one disc.

Then decorating the CD with a permanent marker.

It was the digital version of making someone a mixtape.

Restarting Everything First

One of the greatest digital skills ever learned.

If something stops working…

Turn it off.

Turn it back on.

It’s amazing how often that still solves the problem.

IT support teams everywhere quietly appreciate this.

Learning New Software Without Instructions

Many early computer programmes assumed you somehow already knew how they worked.

Menus everywhere.

Tiny icons.

No obvious help.

So you clicked.

Experimented.

Made mistakes.

Eventually everything started to make sense.

Mostly.

Backing Things Up

Every Gen Xer knows someone who lost everything.

Holiday photos.

Important documents.

Music collections.

After hearing enough horror stories, many of us became obsessive about backups.

External hard drives.

USB sticks.

Cloud storage.

Three copies if possible.

Just in case.

Adapting Again… And Again

Perhaps the biggest skill wasn’t learning one piece of technology.

It was learning to keep learning.

Computers changed.

Phones changed.

The internet changed.

Social media arrived.

Streaming replaced DVDs.

Smartphones replaced almost everything.

Every few years there was something new to understand.

And Gen X simply got on with it.

The Bridge Between Two Worlds

That’s what makes Gen X different.

We remember writing letters.

We also send instant messages.

We used paper maps.

Now we rely on sat nav.

We’ve owned cassette players, CD players, MP3 players and streaming subscriptions.

We’ve experienced every stage of the digital revolution.

We Learned By Doing

Perhaps that’s why Gen X approaches technology differently.

We’re usually willing to have a go.

Click the button.

Try the settings.

See what happens.

Because that’s how we learned in the first place.

Not from online videos.

Not from AI.

Just through curiosity, patience and the occasional spectacular mistake.

And if all else fails…

There’s always the trusted solution.

Turn it off.

Wait ten seconds.

Turn it back on.
