Tech, Prices and Lifestyle Then and Now
If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, you’ll know things felt very different. Some things were better, some things were worse, and some just make you laugh now. Here’s how life stacks up then vs now.
Tech
Back in the day
You had to wait your turn for the house phone. If someone was online, that was it, no calls. The internet sounded like a robot having a meltdown and took about five minutes to load a single page. Music meant cassettes, CDs, or taping songs off the radio and hoping the presenter didn’t talk over the intro.
Now
Everything lives in your pocket. Unlimited music, instant messaging, video calls, and the answer to literally anything within seconds. We’ve gone from “don’t pick up the phone, I’m on the internet” to streaming a film while ordering dinner and texting at the same time.
Prices
Back in the day
A tenner felt like a fortune. You could go out, get food, maybe a drink, and still have change. Petrol was cheap enough that you didn’t check your bank balance before filling up. Concert tickets were affordable and didn’t feel like a financial commitment.
Now
You need a small loan for a night out. Coffee can cost more than lunch used to. Gig tickets feel like luxury purchases, and don’t even start on streaming subscriptions quietly multiplying each month.
Lifestyle
Back in the day
You went out to see people. If your mates weren’t in, you either waited or came back later. Plans were loose and often made on the spot. Weekends meant actually switching off.
Now
Everything is planned, tracked, and updated in real time. You know where everyone is, what they’re doing, and what they had for dinner. Being “offline” now feels like a deliberate decision rather than the default.
Entertainment
Back in the day
You watched what was on, when it was on. Miss it, and you missed it. Friday night TV felt like an event, and chart shows actually mattered. Discovering music took effort and luck.
Now
On demand everything. Entire series dropped in one go. You can listen to any song ever made instantly. Great for choice, but sometimes it takes the magic out of the wait.
Work Life
Back in the day
Work stayed at work. Once you left, that was it until the next day. No emails, no notifications, no “quick one before bed.”
Now
Work follows you everywhere. Emails, messages, notifications at all hours. The line between work and home is a lot blurrier.
The Verdict
Some things are undeniably better now. Life is easier, faster, and more connected. But there’s something about how it used to be. Simpler, slower, and maybe a bit more exciting because you had to wait for things.
What do you miss most about back in the day? And what would you never go back to?
