August is often seen as the grand finale of the British summer.

The school holidays are in full swing, gardens are at their colourful best and, if we’re lucky, the sunshine sticks around for a few more weeks. It’s a month that has long been associated with family days out, community events and making the most of the longer days before autumn starts to appear on the horizon.

Whether you’re planning a packed calendar or simply looking for inspiration, here are some of the traditional ways people enjoy August in the UK.

Head to the seaside

For generations, August has meant a trip to the coast.

Whether it’s building sandcastles, paddling in the sea, eating fish and chips on the promenade or trying not to lose your ice cream to a hungry seagull, a day beside the sea remains one of Britain’s favourite summer traditions.

Don’t forget the obligatory stick of rock before heading home!

Visit a country fair

Across the UK, villages and towns host summer fêtes, agricultural shows and country fairs throughout August.

You’ll often find craft stalls, classic cars, local produce, dog shows, live music and plenty of homemade cakes.

They’re a wonderful way to spend a relaxed summer afternoon while supporting local communities.

Make the most of the garden

August is the perfect month for enjoying outdoor living.

Barbecues, garden games, reading in the sunshine or simply enjoying a cup of tea outside all make the most of the warmer weather.

For keen gardeners, it’s also a busy time for harvesting fruit and vegetables and keeping everything watered during dry spells.

Pick your own fruit

Late summer is a fantastic time to visit a Pick Your Own farm.

Strawberries may be coming to an end, but raspberries, blackberries, plums and early apples are often ready to be picked.

It’s a fun family activity and there’s nothing quite like eating fruit you’ve picked yourself.

Enjoy an ice cream

Some traditions never change.

Whether it’s a classic 99 Flake, a tub of your favourite flavour or something a little more adventurous, August and ice cream seem to go hand in hand.

It somehow tastes even better after a walk along the beach or through the park.

Explore somewhere new

You don’t have to travel far to have an adventure.

August is the perfect excuse to visit a nearby town, explore a nature reserve, discover a historic house or wander around somewhere you’ve never been before.

Sometimes the best days out are the ones closest to home.

Pack a picnic

A blanket, a few sandwiches, some crisps, a flask and maybe a slice of homemade cake.

Picnics are a wonderfully British tradition that never really goes out of fashion.

Whether it’s a park, the countryside or a beach, eating outdoors somehow makes everything taste better.

Watch live sport

August often marks the return of many sporting competitions after the summer break.

From football and rugby to cricket and local sporting events, it’s a great time to support your favourite team or enjoy an afternoon watching live sport with family and friends.

Enjoy outdoor entertainment

Open-air concerts, cinema screenings, theatre performances and community events become increasingly popular during August.

There’s something special about sitting outside on a warm evening while enjoying live entertainment under the open sky.

Make the most of the long evenings

One of the best things about August is that the evenings are still long enough to enjoy after work.

A walk through the park, dinner outside, meeting friends for a drink or simply watching the sunset can be the perfect way to end the day.

Savour the last weeks of summer

Before we know it, September will arrive, schools will return and thoughts will turn towards autumn.

That’s why August is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures.

Whether you’re heading off on holiday, relaxing at home or exploring somewhere new, make the most of every sunny day.

After all, British summers may not last forever, but the memories certainly do.
