Donald Trump’s special envoy has revealed that Russia has agreed to allow the US and Europe to give Ukraine “robust” security guarantees as part of a potential peace deal.
Steve Witkoff told CNN that the Alaska summit produced agreement that the West could offer “Article 5-like” protection, mirroring Nato’s principle that an attack on one is an attack on all. Russia has long opposed Ukraine’s membership of Nato, and Witkoff suggested this could be a compromise if Kyiv accepts it.
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky has described the offer as “historic” ahead of talks with Trump and European leaders tomorrow.
Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have filled the streets of Israel, demanding an end to the war in Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

An 11-year-old girl has died following an incident at a Cornwall beauty spot.
Emergency crews were called to Wacker Quay, near the village of Antony, at around 6pm on Saturday after reports of a person in the water. The girl, from South Devon, was recovered and given emergency treatment, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wacker Quay provides public access to the River Lynher. Devon and Cornwall Police say her next of kin have been informed.
Sir Keir Starmer will travel with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Washington tomorrow for high-stakes talks with Donald Trump.
Downing Street says the prime minister is committed to supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary and will use the visit to reinforce that pledge. Starmer will be joined by several European leaders, including France’s Emmanuel Macron, Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and Germany’s Friedrich Merz.
Their attendance comes at the invitation of the US president.
Vladimir Putin is reported to have demanded control of key Ukrainian regions during his talks with Donald Trump in Alaska.
According to multiple outlets, the Russian leader told the US president he wanted Donetsk and Luhansk in exchange for giving up other occupied areas.
Mr Trump has scheduled further talks with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington on Monday, and suggested this could lead to a three-way meeting with Mr Putin.
Reports claim Mr Trump supports the idea, though Mr Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected ceding territory. Russia already occupies around a fifth of Ukraine, including most of Donetsk province.
A body has been recovered in the search for a missing 12-year-old boy in North Yorkshire.
Police said the child’s body was found in the River Swale in Richmond late on Saturday.
Emergency services launched a large search after reports the boy had entered the water around 5pm and failed to resurface.
Specialist teams recovered the body at around a quarter to eleven that night.
European leaders in the so-called coalition of the willing will hold a conference call on Sunday ahead of Donald Trump’s talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The group, co-chaired by Sir Keir Starmer, France’s President Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, aims to coordinate international support for peace in Ukraine.
