Counter Terrorism Police have confirmed the suspect in this morning’s attack as 35-year-old Jihad al Shamie.

He is a British citizen of Syrian descent and was not previously flagged by Prevent, the government’s counter-extremism programme. Three others – two men in their thirties and a woman in her sixties – have also been arrested on suspicion of preparing or instigating acts of terrorism. They remain in custody tonight.

Two people have been killed and a man has been shot dead by police during a terror attack at a synagogue in Manchester.

The incident happened at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall when a car was driven at the public before the attacker began stabbing people outside. Wearing what appeared to be a bomb vest, he was stopped from entering the building by quick-thinking security staff and members of the congregation. Armed police arrived within minutes and shot him dead seven minutes after the first emergency call.

Detectives say they believe they know his identity but are not yet releasing his name.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has dismissed speculation he could resign after a BBC Panorama investigation revealed evidence of misogyny and racism within the force.

He said those spreading rumours of his departure were “the misogynists and racists who want me out” because he is targeting them. Sir Mark acknowledged systemic failings remain and described a “cancer to be removed,” though he stopped short of calling the problems institutional.

He insisted progress had been made since he took over three years ago.

A fish and chip shop in Slough has been given a damning hygiene rating.

Mr Cod on the High Street was inspected by Slough Borough Council in August and scored just one out of five. Inspectors found issues with hygiene, safety and structural compliance, saying improvements were necessary.

They also reported a lack of confidence in management, requiring what they described as “major necessary improvement.”

Extra security has been sent to synagogues across the UK following the Manchester attack, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed.

Officers are working to reassure communities after the incident, which took place on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Three people remain seriously injured and the bomb squad continues to investigate.

Baroness Michelle Mone says she will resist calls to step down from the House of Lords after PPE Medpro, a company founded by her husband, was ordered to repay £122 million for supplying faulty PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The peer has accused Chancellor Rachel Reeves of pursuing a “vendetta,” warning that her comments put her and her family at risk. Baroness Mone insists she will continue her duties in Parliament despite the controversy.

Two people have been killed and several more injured in an attack at a synagogue in Manchester on the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur.

Police say a security guard was stabbed outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall, before the suspect drove a car at members of the public. Two people died at the scene, while the suspected attacker, who was shot by armed officers, is also believed dead. Three others remain in a serious condition in hospital.

Tributes have been paid to former Slough mayor Satpal Singh Parmar, who has died aged 89.

He served as the town’s mayor in 2002 and 2003 after a long career in public service. Mr Parmar came to the UK from Canada in the 1960s, working first at Mother’s Pride Bakery and later at Royal Mail in Slough. He entered local politics in 1979, influenced by his studies in political science and by his mentor, MP Lord Fenner Brockway.

Conservative MP Claire Coutinho has called on Michelle Mone to resign from the House of Lords.

It follows a High Court ruling ordering PPE Medpro, a firm linked to the peer, to repay nearly £122 million to the government. The company was found to have breached its contract for supplying millions of sterile gowns during the pandemic. The Department of Health argued the gowns were “faulty” and unfit for use.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan says he is “disgusted and appalled” by undercover footage of serving Metropolitan Police officers at Charing Cross station.

The BBC Panorama investigation revealed officers calling for immigrants to be shot, boasting about excessive force, and making light of rape allegations. The footage also showed sexualised comments towards colleagues and racist views expressed about Muslims and immigrants. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called it “disturbing” and “sickening.” Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has apologised, condemning the behaviour as “reprehensible and completely unacceptable.”

Mass layoffs of US federal workers will begin within 48 hours, according to the White House, as America faces its first government shutdown in nearly seven years.

The shutdown began when Congress failed to pass a spending bill before the midnight deadline. With Republicans and Democrats unwilling to compromise, an early vote to end the standoff collapsed within hours. The Senate has adjourned without agreement, leaving hundreds of thousands of workers uncertain about their jobs and economists warning of billions in lost output.

Hackers who attempted to extort the nursery chain Kido Schools by posting stolen children’s data on the darknet have withdrawn the material and now claim to have deleted it.

The group began publishing profiles last week and threatened to release more unless paid in Bitcoin. Parents were also targeted with intimidating phone calls. But after widespread public anger, the criminals appear to have backtracked, removing the posts.

Elon Musk has become the first individual to reach a net worth of more than $500 billion.

Forbes reported that his fortune briefly hit $500.1bn before dipping slightly below the mark. Tesla’s rising value, along with growth in his other ventures including SpaceX and xAI, have propelled Musk far ahead of his nearest rivals in the tech sector, reinforcing his status as the world’s richest man.
