Justice Secretary David Lammy has confirmed that two prisoners are currently at large.

Speaking this morning, he was asked if any further erroneous releases had occurred from detention centres. He said there have been two since his statement to the House of Commons last month. When questioned about whether any violent or sex offenders were among those released, he confirmed there had been releases in error, without providing further detail.

The government will today outline a series of radical measures aimed at tackling what it describes as a courts emergency, with growing speculation that jury trials could be limited to only the most serious offences.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy will warn that persistent delays have pushed the justice system close to breaking point. He says victims are losing confidence, with some abandoning cases entirely or doubting whether any meaningful action will follow. According to Mr Lammy, a system that cannot process cases in a timely manner risks denying justice altogether.

Devolution would involve passing certain powers from central government to a regional level, with decisions being made closer to local communities. Supporters say such a structure could take on major strategic responsibilities, attract new investment and unlock additional long term funding.
